Internet Server Details

The Internet server acts in three different capacities; as a proxy server, web server and an E-mail server.  The proxy server will allow users access to the Internet.  The web server provides a place to host a web site.  Finally, the server will act as the E-mail server.

The Internet server includes a UNIX-based operating system called Linux.  Linux has many components one of which is a built-in firewall.  A firewall provides Internet masquerading, substitution of a false Internet address, to guard against people tracing the connection back to the source.  Linux also has a password shadowing option which protects against unauthorized access to the Internet server, another security protection.  Squid proxy daemon creates internal security by forcing all users to access the web via the proxy server and software.  This allows user activity to be logged and provides restrictions on specific web sites providing for enhanced security.

Sendmail E-mail provides a pop3 E-mail server.  The pop3 E-mail server allows users to receive and check their E-mail from their office workstations as well as from outside the corporation using any pop3 E-mail compatible software such as Eudora, Exchange or Netscape.  This allows users to check their E-mail while traveling, from any place that offers access to the Internet.

The Apache web server software allows the Internet server to also act as a web server, providing a space for a web site, replacing the need for an external web site host.  The Apache software installed on this server is one of the most widely used on the Internet.  It is stable, reliable and secure and sets many of the industry standards in web server technology.
